Description

Set against the majestic backdrop of the English countryside, The History of Sir Richard Calmady: A Romance tells the story of a young heir whose life is irrevocably altered by a tragic accident. Born into wealth and privilege, Richard Calmady faces not only physical limitation but the cruel judgments of a society obsessed with appearance.

As he grows to manhood, Richard’s journey becomes one of profound self-discovery. His relationships with the women who love him — his beautiful mother Katherine, the spirited Honoria St. Quentin, and the dangerously alluring Helen de Vallorbes — chart a path through passion, betrayal, and ultimately transcendence.

Lucas Malet (the pseudonym of Mary St. Leger Kingsley) was one of the most daring and psychologically astute novelists of the late Victorian era. First published in 1901, this novel was considered scandalous for its frank treatment of physical disability and sexual desire. Nietzsche himself owned a copy. Today it stands as a masterpiece of late-Victorian fiction, a gorgeously written exploration of what it means to be human when the body fails but the spirit endures.

With 60 chapters across six books, this is a rich, immersive reading experience — darkly passionate, philosophically searching, and ultimately deeply moving.

Absolutely beautiful book. I was mesmorised from the first page. The way Malet writes about Richard’s inner life is just stunning. Couldnt put it down.

  2. bookworm_anne

A really good read but its a bit long in places. Some parts could of been edited down. Still, the characters are so well drawn that you forgiv the slow bits. The love story had me in tears.

  3. victorian_lit

This is one of them books that stays with you long after you finish it. Richard Calmady is such a complex character, I found myself thinking about him for days. The descriptions of the English countryside are lovely too.

  4. tom_reads

I dont usually read romance but this was recomended by a friend. Its more than just a love story – theres so much depth here. The bits about disability and how society treats people who are different really made me think. 4 stars from me.

Our book club chose this and every one of us loved it! The discussion we had about Nietzsches copy and what he might of thought of it was fascinating. A true hidden gem of Victorian literature. Highly recomended!
