Description

H. De Vere Stacpoole’s The Blue Lagoon is a hauntingly beautiful romance of innocence and survival. When two young cousins, Dick and Emmeline Lestrange, are shipwrecked on a remote South Pacific island with their sailor uncle, they must learn to fend for themselves in a tropical paradise. After their uncle’s death, the children are left entirely alone, with only each other for company.

As years pass, Dick and Emmeline grow from childhood into adolescence and adulthood, untouched by the conventions of civilization. They discover the wonders of the island — its azure lagoon, its lush forests, its strange and beautiful creatures — and gradually discover each other. Stacpoole portrays their awakening love with extraordinary delicacy, free of judgment and full of wonder.

The novel weaves together breathtaking descriptions of island life with the psychological drama of two souls navigating the mysteries of nature, maturity, and love without any guide but instinct. From the comedy of their attempts to teach themselves to read, to the terror of a cyclone, to the poignant mystery of their final fate, The Blue Lagoon holds the reader in a spell that has lasted for over a century.

5 reviews for The Blue Lagoon: A Romance

  1. tropicalDreamer

This book is beautiful and heartbreaking. I read it after seeing the old movie and the book is so much better. Stacpoole describes the island like youre there. The way Dick and Emmeline grow up and fall in love is handled so gently. The ending will stay with you for a long time. Highly recomend.

  2. litTeacherM

A fascinating period piece that raises intersting questions about nature vs nurture. The language is lush and evocative, sometimes overly so, but the story has real power. Students find it engaging despite the old fashioned prose. Good for discussion about colonialism and the noble savage trope.

  3. beachReader

I couldnt put this down. Its like a dream from start to finish. Yes the premise is a bit implausible (two kids surviving on an island alone) but you dont read this for realism. You read it for the atmosphere and the love story. Definately one of my favouite discoveries this year.

  4. bookclubKaren

I can see why this is a classic but it was a bit slow for me. The descriptions go on and on sometimes. The romance is sweet but I wanted more actual plot. Still worth reading for the ending which really surprised me. Our bookclub had a good discussion about it.

  5. sailorSam

My grandmother gave me this book when I was young and Ive loved it ever since. Stacpoole really captures the magic of the South Pacific. The chapter about the cyclone is incredible, you can feel the wind. If you like castaway stories with a romantic twist this is for you.
