Dexter sold warming pans to the West Indies (they came back as molasses ladles), shipped gloves to a port without hands, and loaded a cargo of Bibles onto a vessel bound for a country of Catholics — and in every case the market somehow rewarded his folly. The Pickle is his monument: a self-published boast of a book dashed off without capitals and almost without punctuation, announcing to ‘the Knowing Ones’ how a fool’s luck became a fortune.

Later editions added a page of commas and periods, and Dexter’s note explained they were for those who found the first printing too easy to read. The whole performance is one of the strangest and most joyful documents in American letters — part trade ledger, part royal decree, part private joke that steadily became a public legend.
