Love-Letters between a Nobleman and His Sister (1684) is a scandalous roman à clef by Aphra Behn, the first professional woman writer in English literature. The novel takes the form of an exchange of letters between the fictional Philander and Sylvia, whose illicit passion mirrors the real-life elopement of Ford Grey, Lord Grey of Werke, with his sister-in-law Lady Henrietta Berkeley — a scandal that rocked the court of Charles II.

The letters trace the arc of an all-consuming affair: the initial declarations of passion, the clandestine meetings, the guilty recriminations, the schemes and deceptions required to sustain the relationship, and the eventual unraveling of the lovers’ world as their secrets come to light. Behn’s epistolary technique allows her to render the psychological intensity of the affair from both perspectives, exploring the tension between desire and duty, freedom and consequence.

Behn was a playwright, poet, and novelist who wrote with a frankness about sexual politics that was unprecedented for a woman of her era. Love-Letters is regarded as a landmark in the development of the English novel, anticipating the psychological realism of Richardson and Laclos. This edition presents the complete text of the first part of the novel, carefully formatted for modern readers.

    wow. just wow. i knew mary wollstonecraft was a pioneer but reading her actual love letters is something else. the raw emotion on every page — her longing, her frustration, her hope — its like peeking into someone soul. the introduction by roger ingpen gives good context too. the essays in the first few chapters really helped me understand who she was before reading the letters.

    fascinating collection. you can see wollstonecrafts intellect and passion in every letter. some of them are heartbreakingly short — you can tell she was writing in moments of desperation. the edition is clean and well organized. only wish there were more letters from imlays side so you could see both perspectives. but thats not the editors fault of course.

    mary wollstonecraft was ahead of her time in so many ways. these letters show a woman who refused to be silenced, who demanded to be loved on her own terms. the letter where she talks about her daughter is so tender it made me cry. this ebook is beautifully formatted with proper chapter breaks for each letter. highly recommend to anyone interested in early feminist writing.

    interesting from a historical perspective but honestly the letters get repetetive. its the same cycle over and over — she loves him, she misses him, shes angry at him, she forgives him. i get that real relationships are complicated but reading 77 variations of the same emotional pattern gets old. the biographical preface was actually the best part for me. good formatting though.

    these letters are a treasure. wollstonecrafts writing is so vivid and immediate — you forget youre reading something written over 200 years ago. her description of her relationship with her daughter and her thoughts on motherhood are especially moving. the ingpen memoir at the start is a bit dry but helpfull context. the letters themselves are what matter. absolutly loved it.

    really enjoyed this peek into history. wollstonecraft comes across as so human — brilliant and passionate but also needy and insecure at times. it makes her feel real in a way that a dry biography never could. the only downside is that some letters are just a few sentences long and you wish they were longer. but thats the nature of a real correspondence i suppose. well formatted epub.
