   I thought I knew this story, but the annotations opened my eyes to so much I’d missed. The historical context about Flemish painting and Rubens added a whole new dimension. The vocabulary cards helped my 12-year-old read along without frustration. A wonderful edition for families.

   An exemplary annotated edition. The companion card on Ouida’s life and the reception history of the novel is genuinely insightful. The post-chapter understanding sections are well-designed for classroom use. The glossary of Flemish terms is a thoughtful addition. Highly recommended.

   Beautifully presented. The colour-coded annotation cards make it easy to find explanations without breaking the flow of reading. The discussion questions at the end sparked a great conversation in my book club. Only wish there were more illustrations, but the annotations more than make up for it.

   I bought the plain edition first and loved it, then upgraded to this annotated version. The difference is night and day. The analysis cards explaining Ouida’s prose style and the Rubens references gave me a much deeper appreciation of the story. The quiz was fun too!
