The Eclipse of Russia by Emile Joseph Dillon

Description

Emile Joseph Dillon spent a quarter of a century in Russia as one of the most respected correspondents in Europe, and this book is the account of how the empire he had watched so closely came to eclipse. He begins with the enigma — the Russian mind, its unity or lack of it — and moves through the machinery of the Tsardom and its bureaux, the reign of Nicholas II and its false dawns, and the extraordinary figures of its last years: Father Gapon and the double agent Azeff, Witte condemned to die, and Rasputin, whom Dillon treats more as a symbol than a man.

As a correspondent Dillon had unusual access to the court, the ministry, and the revolutionary underground alike, and his book carries the authority of personal recollection at every turn. His analysis of Russia’s international relations and the secret treaty — published here with its details at last exposed — is history written while the ink was still wet. A major book of contemporary history and a key to everything about Old Russia’s ending.

Why readers still come back to it

• Written at the crisis itself by the west’s most trusted man in Russia
• Intimate portraits of Witte, Gapon, Azeff, and Rasputin
• An indispensable contemporary account of the fall of the Tsardom
