Thomas Hardy’s early masterpiece A Pair of Blue Eyes — his most romantic, tragic novel. Elfride Swancourt, a vicar’s daughter on the wild Cornish coast, becomes entangled in love with young architect Stephen Smith, then with the older, rational critic Henry Knight, as misunderstandings, ambition, and family secrets drive the two men apart. This annotated edition adds 200 color-coded cards explaining characters, themes, symbolism, dramatic irony, foreshadowing, and the dialects of the cliffs and sea.

Description

A Pair of Blue Eyes (1873) is Thomas Hardy’s third novel and in many ways his most personal — written as he courted his own first wife, with the sea-cliff country of Cornwall and the idealized figure of a blue-eyed girl at its heart. The story follows Elfride Swancourt, the proud, imaginative daughter of an impoverished vicar at Endelstow on the wild North Cornwall coast. Two very different men fall in love with her: the young, low-born architect Stephen Smith, whose secret family history threatens his suit, and the older, accomplished literary critic Henry Knight, whose rigorous, rational view of the world has never been touched by love until he meets her.

As Elfride is pulled between them — and as a hidden episode from her past resurfaces at the worst possible moment — Hardy unfolds a tragedy of missed chances, narrow escapes, and self-inflicted delays. The novel’s famous cliff-edge scene and its painfully ironic ending have made it one of Hardy’s most admired and most moving works, and it is the book where he first developed many of the themes of Far from the Madding Crowd and Tess of the d’Urbervilles: the power of class and reputation, the cost of a woman’s honesty, and the cruel indifference of fate.

This DodaBooks annotated edition contains the full, carefully produced text of the novel, enriched with 200 color-coded annotation cards placed throughout the forty chapters. Each card opens up a specific moment in the story — whether it is the symbolism of the sea and the cliffs, the dramatic irony of what the reader knows that the characters don’t, the foreshadowing of the ending, the social pressures of Victorian class and marriage, or Hardy’s use of language and allusion. Every card includes a verbatim passage from the text, a clear explanation, and an “In Plain English” restatement so you can read with both pleasure and insight. The edition also includes a glossary, discussion questions, a reading quiz, and a character map — perfect for book clubs, students, and readers who want to go deeper into one of Hardy’s finest early novels.
