The Adventures of an Ensign by Valentine Williams

Description

Valentine Williams was one of the most reliable adventure novelists of his generation, and The Adventures of an Ensign shows the lighter side of his talent. It opens at Waterloo Station, where so many of England’s military stories begin, and introduces — with a bow and a wink — our Ensign, a Guards subaltern so ordinary he can only claim attention in connection with the strange events that follow, and his comrade, the Lad.

Through the officers’ mess beneath the Brigade flag, the long pavilions of camp, and the elegant boredom of London duty, the story advances with a light hand toward the crash and the night it pays off in. Williams was a master of the gentlemanly thriller, and this ensign’s progress from drill yards to danger is his most charming performance — a short, bright adventure with the costume and manners of Edwardian England entire.

Why readers still come back to it

• Brisk, witty military adventure in the golden-age manner
• The famous charm of the Guards-and-London world of 1914
• A short book that manages both comedy and genuine danger
