The Knights of the Cross is a national epic in the shape of a novel. Its hero, Zbyszko of Bogdaniec, swears an oath of vengeance that binds him through duels and capture, love for the beautiful Danusia, and the slow schooling of a hotheaded young knight into a leader of men.

Sienkiewicz’s genius was his ability to make history feel personal and to make personal feeling historical — every duel is a moral argument and every battlefield a map of national memory. The climactic battle of Grunwald, the greatest clash of medieval northern Europe, is rendered with the eye of a war-correspondent and the heart of a patriot, in one of the finest battle scenes in the novel’s literature.
