The narrator tracks Sanin into middle age, letting the reader see not only the glory of the spring but the cold country the river eventually reaches. It is a study of will — or rather of its absence — and of the foreignness of weakness to the people it most injures.

The novel is compact, swift, and emotionally ferocious. In a few scenes Turgenev does what other novelists take volumes to compass: the German sweetshop, the duel, the garden, the terrible sale of a promise.
