Sanin is a young man of twenty-two, homeward bound through Germany, when a single morning at the confectioner’s changes his life. Ivan Turgenev’s The Torrents of Spring — introduced by lines from an old ballad about gladness rushing away like spring torrents — is a love story of dazzling warmth and devastating regret. This DodaBooks edition delivers the complete text in clean, beautifully typeset EPUB form.

Description

“Years of gladness, days of joy, like the torrents of spring they hurried away.” The epigraph of Turgenev’s late masterpiece sets its key precisely: the story of a passion that arrives with the violence of meltwater and is gone before the man who felt it understands what he had. Sanin, travelling home to Russia from Italy, stops in Frankfurt and enters a confectioner’s shop and a world — the beautiful Gemma, her family, and the offer of a happiness so near it can almost be touched.

Turgenev wrote The Torrents of Spring in his sixties, looking back across a lifetime of his own hesitations, and the book feels composed from that long perspective. The narrator tracks Sanin into middle age, letting the reader see not only the glory of the spring but the cold country the river eventually reaches. It is a study of will — or rather of its absence — and of the foreignness of weakness to the people it most injures.

The novel is compact, swift, and emotionally ferocious. In a few scenes Turgenev does what other novelists take volumes to compass: the German sweetshop, the duel, the garden, the terrible sale of a promise. The edition also includes further tales from the same volume, so readers receive a full measure of Turgenev’s late mastery.

Why readers still come back to it

  • One of the finest short novels in Russian literature, held in a day’s reading.
  • Turgenev’s devastating command of irony: the reader sees the tragedy before the hero does.
  • A supreme study of youthful ardor and the price of not deciding.
