Arriving in the village of Portofino, the women find the castle buried in wisteria, surrounded by terraced gardens, and bathed in Mediterranean sunlight. The magic of the place begins to work on each of them in unexpected ways. Mrs. Wilkins blossoms like the flowers around her, Mrs. Arbuthnot loosens her strict moral grip, Lady Caroline finds herself wanting something more than admiration, and even the prickly Mrs. Fisher softens in the warmth.

Things become complicated when the women’s husbands arrive, bringing London’s gray cares with them. But the castle’s enchantment proves strong enough to heal old wounds and rekindle lost love. By the time their month is up, all four women have been changed forever.

    I picked this up on a whim and honestly it was exactly what I needed. The descriptions of the italian castle and gardens are so vivid you can almost smell the wisteria. The characters start out kind of annoying but thats the point, they grow on you. My only complaint is the ending felt a little rushed, like she ran out of steam.

    This book is like a warm hug. I’ve read it three times now and each time I find something new to love. The way the sunlight and the sea change those womens lives is just beautiful. Mrs. Wilkins is my favorite, her transformation from a timid little mouse to someone who stands up for herself is just *chefs kiss*.

    Its fine for what it is, a light romantic escape novel. But honestly nothing much happens for long stretches. People sitting in gardens, having tea, talking about feelings. The husbands showing up at the end felt contrived. Not my thing but I can see why others like it. The writing is good though, I’ll give her that.

    I read this on my lunch break at work and it transportes me away from my cubicle. That is the magic of this book. It makes you belive that a change of scenery really can change your life. Lady Caroline’s arc suprised me the most, I thought she’d just be a shallow socialite but she had depth. Going to read more Von Arnim after this.

    The first few chapters are a bit of a slog, all that rain and moping in London. but once they get to Italy the book realy takes off. The castle sounds amazing, I looked up pictures of Portofino after reading and it is as beautiful as described. Von Arnim has a dry wit that sneaks up on you. Would recomend to anyone needing a literary vacation.
