Description

Augustine of Hippo’s The City of God (De Civitate Dei) is one of the most influential works in Western philosophy and Christian theology. Written between AD 413 and 426, the work was prompted by the sack of Rome by the Visigoths in 410, which had led pagans to blame Christianity for the empire’s decline. Augustine responded with a monumental defense of Christianity and a comprehensive philosophy of history.

The work is structured in twenty-two books. The first ten books mount a philosophical and historical refutation of paganism, arguing that the worship of Roman gods had never provided moral or temporal security. The remaining twelve books develop Augustine’s positive vision: history as the unfolding drama of two cities — the City of God, whose citizens are motivated by love of God, and the Earthly City, whose citizens are motivated by love of self. These two cities are intermingled in the present age and will be separated only at the Last Judgment.

This first volume of the Dods translation contains Books I through X, in which Augustine dismantles the pagan reproach against Christianity and lays the philosophical groundwork for his grand historical scheme.
