The first volume of Sir Richard F. Burton’s unexpurgated translation of the Arabian Nights — a treasure trove of ancient Middle Eastern folk tales, magic, and adventure, framed by the story of Scheherazade, who must tell a new tale each night to survive.
Description
Here begins the first volume of Richard F. Burton’s celebrated translation of the Arabian Nights Entertainments, the world’s most famous collection of Middle Eastern folk tales.
Volume One introduces the frame story of King Shahryar, who, betrayed by his wife, marries a new bride each night only to have her executed at dawn. When the clever and learned Scheherazade volunteers to be his bride, she begins telling him a story on their wedding night — but leaves it unfinished at daybreak, compelling the King to spare her life so he can hear the conclusion. Thus begins the Thousand and One Nights.
This volume contains the opening tales within that legendary cycle, including:
• The Tale of the Merchant and the Jinni
• The Fisherman and the Jinni
• The Porter and the Three Ladies of Baghdad
• The Tale of the Three Apples
• The Tale of Nur al-Din Ali and His Son
• The Hunchback’s Tale
Burton’s translation is renowned for its fidelity to the original Arabic, its extensive anthropological footnotes, and its unexpurgated treatment of the tales. This edition presents the complete text of Volume One, freshly typeset for modern readers.
Join Scheherazade on the first of her thousand and one nights, and discover why these stories have captivated readers for centuries.

ScheherazadeFan –
Absolutly stunning collection. Burtons translation is so vivid you can almost smell the spice markets and hear the story tellers in the streets. The Tale of the Merchant and the Jinni hooked me from the first page. Definatly getting volume 2.
ClassicTales –
Ive been wanting to read the REAL Arabian Nights not the watered down kids version and this is it. Burtons footnotes are fascinating even if they are a bit much sometimes. The frame story with Shahryar and Scheherazade is such a clever conceit. Beautifully formated edition.

The stories themselves are amazing but be warned this is NOT a quick read. Each tale branches into another tale like those Russian nesting dolls and before you know it your three hours in and only on Night 3. The Fisherman and the Jinni was my favorite. Some of the language is a bit old fashioned but thats Burton for you.
BookishMom –
Got this for my husband who loves middle eastern history and he hasnt put it down. Says its way better than the penguin classics version he read in college. The formatting is really clean and the chapter navigation makes it easy to find your place. Only complaint is I wish there were more illustrations but the cover is gorgeous.
DesertReader –
Burton was a genuine character — a Victorian explorer who translated these stories with such passion you can feel it. The Hunchbacks Tale had me laughing out loud. Its incredible to think these stories are over a thousand years old and still so entertaining. This edition does them justice. Definitly recomend to any fan of world literature.
