Description

Life on the Mississippi is Mark Twain’s vivid, affectionate memoir of his years as a cub pilot and then a licensed steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River before the Civil War. Part travelogue, part history, and part comedy, the book weaves together Twain’s personal experiences with the river’s rich and often bloody history — from De Soto’s discovery to the rise and fall of the steamboat era. Twain recounts the rigorous training required to ‘learn the river’, the pilots’ fierce independence, the duels, the gamblers, and the ever-changing channel that kept every voyage unpredictable.

The second half of the book describes a return journey twenty years later, finding a world transformed by railroads, war, and progress. Written with Twain’s trademark wit and eye for absurdity, Life on the Mississippi remains one of the great American travel narratives.
