Joan and Co. by Frederick Orin Bartlett

Description

Joan Fairburne is barely halfway through her first New York season when the quizzical smile that so fascinates Dicky Burnett begins to appear more often than a young woman of twenty should allow. She is rich, fashionable, and restless — and the men around her, from the elegant Dicky to the mysterious silent partner of the Fairburne interests, cannot decide whether she is a girl or a woman of business. That ambiguity is Frederick Orin Bartlett’s subject.

Bartlett wrote with a sharp, affectionate eye for the manners of his day, and Joan and Co. is his most accomplished novel of metropolitan life: the dinners, the wordplay, the financial interests that underwrite the drawing-room, and a heroine whose charm is her intelligence. A romance in the grand sense — the meetings it engineers between money and sentiment played out against the smartest backdrop Edwardian New York could offer.

Why readers still come back to it

• A sparkling portrait of Edwardian New York at its most fashionable
• An intelligent débutante heroine with a mind of her own
• Sharp dialogue and a plot that does not go where you expect
