Changeling, and Other Stories by Donn Byrne

Description

Donn Byrne, the Irish-American author whose romantic novels delighted readers in the years around the First World War, had a born short-story writer’s instinct: opening with a voice and holding it to the last word. This collection gathers his shorter fiction — the haunting title piece of the changeling child, the Belfast stories steeped in the city’s talk, and the more exotic flights such as “The Parliament at Thebes” and “A Quatrain of Ling Tai Fu’s.”

Byrne’s prose is always conscious of its own music — it leans towards ballad and lyric where other writers reach for prose. The stories move between Ireland, the ancient world, and the China of the imagination, but his interest never wavers: courage, loyalty, and the strange turns of fate that make storytellers of us all. A generous collection from a writer too little read today.

Why readers still come back to it

• A showcase of Byrne’s lyrical Irish storytelling
• Varied collection — folk-horror, comedy, and exotic romance
• Beautifully cadenced prose from the twilight of the romantic revival
