Prosper Mérimée’s Carmen (1845) is a novella of passion, obsession, and tragedy set in nineteenth-century Spain. The story is narrated by a French archaeologist traveling through Andalusia, who encounters the notorious bandit Don José Navarro on the road. Don José, a former soldier, tells the story of his ruin: his infatuation with Carmen, a fiery and unpredictable Romani woman who works in a cigarette factory in Seville.

Carmen is one of literature’s most memorable characters — willful, seductive, and utterly free. She lives by her own code, answering to no man. Don José’s obsession with her leads him to abandon his military career, join a band of smugglers, commit murder, and ultimately face a choice that seals both their fates. The novella moves from the streets of Seville to the wild gorges of the Sierra Morena, building toward its devastating climax.

Mérimée’s story captivated readers from its first publication and went on to inspire Georges Bizet’s world-famous opera. This edition presents the complete 1845 text, with the author’s original preface and the scholarly notes on Romani language and customs that Mérimée appended to the narrative.

    i was blown away by how different this is from the opera. the original story is darker and more brutal, and the ending hits you like a punch. merimee writes with such economy — every sentence pushes the story forward. the edition itself is clean and well formatted. no complaints.

    always wanted to read the source material after seeing the opera and this did not dissapoint. Carmen is such a compelling character — fierce, free, and utterly unwilling to compromise. the translation reads smoothly. only wish it had the original french on facing pages for comparison but thats a personal prefrence.

    A masterpiece of the novella form. Mérimée packs more tension and psychology into 90 pages than most novelists manage in 500. The framing device with the archaeologist narrator is brilliant — it gives the tragedy a documentary feel that makes it even more chilling. the edition is well put together, good font and margins.

    the story is gripping no doubt but i found the ethnographic section at the end kinda boring. i get that merimee was showing off his research but it really kills the momentum after the intense final chapter. also wish theyd included some contextual notes about spanish history of that period. still a good read overall.

    dark, passionate, and brutally honest about human nature. Don Josés descent from honorable soldier to murderer is terrifying because it feels so inevitable. Carmen is one of literatures great anti-heroines — you understand why Jose cant let her go even as you know it will end in tragedy. excellent edition, downloaded and read on my phone without any formatting issues.

    short but powerful. read it in one sitting. the atmosphere of 19th century spain is so vivid you can almost feel the heat and smell the cigar smoke. merimee doesnt judge his characters he just lays out their destruction like a document. the translation by mary loyd is fluid and natural. only gave 4 stars because i wanted more but i suppose thats the point of a good story right
