Archibald Cameron of Lochiel, son of a Highland chief, comes of age among the seigneurs of old Quebec — and loves Blanche D’Haberville. The great romance of French Canada, set against the fall of the colony.
Description
Philippe Aubert de Gaspé, the baron of old Quebec who left behind the century’s most beloved portrait of his homeland, built this novel on a true and tragic friendship. Archibald Cameron of Lochiel, bred partly in the Highlands and partly in France, becomes the guest of the seigneur D’Haberville and his family on the south shore of the St. Lawrence — and there, among sorcerers’ sabbaths, may-feasts, and the long singing evenings of the manor house, he falls in love with the house, its land, and its daughter Blanche.
The novel gathers force as the Seven Years’ War breaks: Montcalm, the burning villages of the south shore, the nightmarish portage through Indian country, and at last the fateful plain above Quebec in 1759, where the old order of New France and the friendship between the two families meet their test. Aubert de Gaspé writes as a man of that vanished world, and every page carries its vanished manners — the seigneur’s rights, the household saints, the songs and legends of the river.
