About the Author

Anna Sewell (1820–1878) was a British Quaker writer born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. Permanently disabled in early adolescence, she relied on horse-drawn carriages for mobility, developing an intense, lifelong empathy for working horses. Confined to her sickbed during the final seven years of her life, Sewell dictated Black Beauty to her mother, living just long enough to see her singular masterpiece achieve international acclaim and spark the campaign that abolished the bearing rein across Britain.
