Tobias Smollett’s The Expedition of Humphry Clinker was published in 1771, the final year of the author’s life, and is widely regarded as his finest work. The novel is epistolary in form, composed entirely of letters exchanged among the members of a traveling party journeying from Wales through England and Scotland.

The party is assembled by Matthew Bramble, a valetudinarian Welsh squire of irritable disposition but warm heart, who undertakes the tour on the advice of his physician. He is accompanied by his sister Tabitha, a domineering woman of matrimonial ambitions; his nephew Jery, a sardonic Oxford student; his niece Lydia, a romantic young woman nursing a secret attachment; and a retinue of servants, among them Win Jenkins, the family maid whose malapropism-filled letters provide much of the novel’s comedy. The title character, Humphry Clinker, joins the group midway through the journey as a destitute ostler and becomes increasingly central to the developing plot.

The novel’s epistolary structure allows each correspondent to narrate the same events from a distinct perspective, creating a layered and often comic portrait of eighteenth-century British society. The party visits Bath, London, Edinburgh, and the Scottish Highlands, encountering a wide range of characters and social milieux. The work draws extensively on Smollett’s own travels through Britain and incorporates sharp observations of contemporary manners, medicine, and politics.

This edition presents the complete text of the 1771 first edition, with all eighty-three letters in their original sequence.

    A rollicking picaresque that captures the chaos of 18th-century Britain. Smolletts command of different epistolary voices is remarkable — Win Jenkins missives alone are worth the price of admission. The DodaBooks formatting does justice to the novels intricate structure. Four stars only because Brambles hypochondria can wear thin after 400 pages.

    What a delight! I picked this up on a whim and couldnt put it down. The letter format makes it feel like youre reading somebodys private correspondence, which is hilarious and sometimes touching. Matthew Bramble is one of the great grumpy characters in literature. Highly recommend this edition — clean text, no distractions.

    This is my first Smollett and I was pleasantly surprised. The Scotland sections are particularly vivid, and you can tell the author knew the landscapes intimately. The ePUB worked flawlessly on my Kobo.

    Well written and historically interesting but quite long. The epistolary format means you get the same events described from multiple perspectives which is clever but also means a lot of repetition. Good edition though, well formatted.

    Smollett is vastly underrated. This novel anticipates Dickens by seventy years — the comic characters, the social commentary, the sheer vitality of the prose. The DodaBooks edition is clean and beautifully formatted. A gem.
