The tragic tale of the Chevalier des Grieux and his passionate, destructive love for the beautiful and fickle Manon Lescaut—a story of obsession, betrayal, and redemption set against the glittering backdrop of 18th-century Paris and the wilds of Louisiana.
Description
When the Chevalier des Grieux first lays eyes on Manon Lescaut at a Parisian inn, he is instantly captivated. She is young, beautiful, and enchanting—but she is also being escorted to a convent by armed guards. In a moment of reckless passion, des Grieux helps her escape, and thus begins one of literature’s most devastating love stories.
From the salons of Paris to the prisons of the Bastille and ultimately to the desolate wilderness of Louisiana, des Grieux follows Manon through every twist of fortune. She is flighty and unfaithful, drawn to wealth and pleasure, yet he cannot break free from his love for her. Their story is a masterful exploration of the madness of love, the nature of obsession, and the cost of following one’s heart without reason.
First published in 1731, Abbé Prévost’s novel caused a scandal with its frank portrayal of passion and its morally ambiguous heroine. It has remained a classic of French literature for nearly three centuries, inspiring operas by Puccini and Massenet, and countless adaptations.

one of the most beautiful and heartbreaking love stories ever written. Prevosts prose is exquisite and the characters feel so real. Manon is frustrating yet utterly compelling. a masterpiece of French literature

what a tragic story! Des Grieux is such a fool for love and Manon is impossible but you cant help being drawn in. the ending had me in tears. the translation flows well. only complaint is some slow parts in the middle

un grand classique de la litterature francaise. even in translation the beauty of the story shines through. the passion and tragedy of des Grieux and Manon is timeless. if you loved the opera you will love the original story even more

ive read this multiple times and it never gets old. yes Manon is frustrating and des Grieux is naive but thats the point. its a story about how love can destroy us. the Louisiana scenes are particularly powerful. 4 stars because the pacing is a little uneven

important historical novel and I can see why its a classic but honestly I found it hard to sympathise with either main character. des Grieux is a simp and Manon is a gold digger. still the writing is good and the historical setting is interesting
