Præraphaelite Diaries and Letters by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Ford Madox Brown, and Gabriele Rossetti

Description

The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was the most exciting of all Victorian rebellions in art, and this volume gathers the documents that let you hear it from inside. Edited and introduced by a participant, it brings together the diaries and letters of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Ford Madox Brown, and their collaborators — the daily record of the movement’s early years, when a band of young painters pledged themselves to study nature with fidelity and to damn the academic recipe.

A considerable body of P.R.B. material had already been published, the editor notes, but much of it was narrative and commentary; here is the other kind — the raw documents of old date, letters, and diaries written while the battle was being fought. The result is an incomparable record of friendship, ambition, poverty, and defiance in the making of some of the century’s most beautiful pictures.
