Description

Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women (1868–1869) is one of the most beloved works of American literature. The novel follows the four March sisters — Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy — as they grow up in Concord, Massachusetts, during the Civil War era. Their father is away serving as a chaplain, and the family, while not destitute, must practice the genteel poverty that Alcott renders with such warmth and honesty.

Each sister has a distinct personality and ambition: Meg longs for refinement and domestic happiness; Jo, the tomboyish central figure, dreams of becoming a writer; gentle Beth finds joy in music and home; and artistic Amy pursues elegance and social position. The novel traces their childhood adventures, their private struggles, their first loves, and their gradual emergence into womanhood. The narrative is structured in two parts: the first follows the family through a year of Christmases, theatricals, and daily life; the second, published separately as Good Wives, follows the sisters into adulthood, marriage, and, in Beth’s case, illness and death.

Alcott drew heavily on her own family for the novel: Jo is a self-portrait, Beth is based on her sister Lizzie, and the Alcotts’ Concord home provided the setting. The novel’s enduring appeal lies in its vivid characters, its unsentimental treatment of hardship, and its celebration of the bonds of family. This edition presents the complete text of the 1880 edition, incorporating Alcott’s final revisions.

i read this as a kid and loved it but coming back to it as an adult is a whole different experience. Jo March is one of the greatest characters ever written. the way she struggles between her ambition and her love for her family is so real. the edition is clean and the chapter navigation works perfectly on my kobo.

  2. Sarah P. –

always going to be a classic for a reason. the first part is charming and warm and the second part hits you right in the feels. only giving 4 stars because i wish theyd kept the original illustrations from the first edition — the text is beautiful but some visual breaks would be nice. still a great edition for the price.

bought this for my daughter and ended up reading it myself again. Alcott writes with such warmth and honesty. the March sisters feel like real people — Megs vanity, Jos temper, Beths shyness, Amys vanity — all so perfectly drawn. the formatting is excellent, no typos or weird line breaks. highly recomend.

A perfect edition of a perfect book. Theres a reason this novel has never gone out of print. Jo March taught me that its okay to be ambitious and angry and loving and messy all at once. the download was instant and the file works on my phone, tablet, and kindle without any issues. will buy more from this shop.

  5. Amanda L. –

the book itself is wonderful but i feel like the description oversells the “beautiful formatting.” its fine — readable, no errors — but nothing special. the cover image is really nice though. also wish the price was a bit lower for a public domain book. but the download was easy and it works so no major complaints.

got this for a book club and everyone loved the edition. the table of contents makes it easy to navigate and the font size is comfortable for long reading sessions. little women holds up so well — the scenes between Jo and her mother talking about anger and self-control are some of the best in all of literature. four stars because I prefer annotated editions with historical notes but for a clean text this is great.
