27 poems selected with a prefatory note by Alice Meynell and a portrait by Dante Gabriel Rossetti
Description
Thomas Gordon Hake (1809–1895) occupies a distinctive position in Victorian poetry. A physician by profession and a poet by vocation, he moved in the circle of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, counting Dante Gabriel Rossetti among his closest friends and admirers.
This DodaBooks edition presents 27 selected poems spanning more than fifty years of Hake’s creative life, from The Piromides (1839) to The New Day (1890). The selection was made by Alice Meynell, who contributed a prefatory note, and includes Rossetti’s portrait of the author.
This edition presents the complete text, carefully formatted for modern e-readers.

A beautiful edition of a neglected Victorian poet. The formatting is exquisite — each poem is presented with care, and the stanza-based layout makes reading a pleasure. Meynell’s prefatory note adds wonderful context. Highly recommended for lovers of 19th-century poetry.

Hake is an underappreciated voice in Victorian poetry, and this collection does him justice. The selection by Alice Meynell is thoughtful, spanning his entire career. The Rossetti connection makes this especially interesting for Pre-Raphaelite enthusiasts.

I discovered Hake through Rossetti’s review and was not disappointed. ‘ECCE HOMO!’ and ‘THE SNAKE CHARMER’ are masterpieces. The EPUB renders perfectly on my Kobo — clean typography, working table of contents, and proper poem formatting.
