The Dangerous Game by William Le Queux

Description

William Le Queux was the most tireless of Edwardian writers of international intrigue, and The Dangerous Game moves with his customary speed across the lounges, banks, and newsrooms of a Europe sliding toward war. It opens in the pretty hotel lounge at Corfu, where a stout, clean-shaven Englishman in pince-nez chats with a good-looking woman of thirty — and where a mistaken telegram, describing a cargo of currants, will set a quiet novelist to work at his manuscript with rather more on his mind than she left him.

Le Queux had a gift for making the reader believe that behind the postcards of Europe ran a world of cipher and bargain where a ship-load of honesty could be currency. The Dangerous Game plays that game with a novelist at its centre — a man who has to write his way out — and races to its resolution with all the verve that made its author the most borrowed author in the public libraries of his day. Amusing, tense, and gloriously of its time.

Why readers still come back to it

• High-energy Edwardian espionage from the genre’s founding master
• A novelist-hero who must write his way out of genuine danger
• European setting, dashed-off brilliance, and a plot that never rests
